Birdfeeder Snow Barametor

Bird feeder Snow Barometer

How much snow came in with the storm, that is all new snow on top of the feeder

New snow made it beautiful around the resort this morning.  I am starting to think spring though and a beach picture is starting to replace this picture at the moment….  but it is a great pic if you ski, shoeshoe, snowmobile or want to hybernate with someone special in front of the fireplace.  Did I mention spring rates start this weekend and I have cabins open? hint hint…… I took the advertising class on soft selling

You know spring is around the corner when the woodpile is getting a little low

2 neighbors on the lake had it out yesterday and I caught a couple pics of them in the tree.  The crows were doing battle with this eagle over the left overs from the icefishermen that were here this weekend.  They were swooping at one another to quick for me to catch a pic, so I only caught this one of them eyeing each other up.  I am assuming there are a few minnows left over from Al, Jimmy and Fritz on the ice.  This time of year you can see eagles hanging out by ice fishing holes quite a bit.  Missing pic was of the eagle winning out and feasting at the holes who took off as soon as Poe bounded ahead of me to take the eagle on for some of the spoils.  How a golden retreiver would fare with an eagle I do not pretend to think Poe had a chance so I am happy the eagle took off before I got a shot of it on the lake

I caught this deer heading out to the lake this morning.  You know winter is still here due to the think darker coat the deer still have

Our snowmobiling family here this week has been having a good time.  Tucker above was headed off to snowmobile to The Waters to go swimming with his family.  What was more fun the snowmobile ride or the waterpark?  I am not sure but I am sure he took a nap when they got home.

This was emailed to me I was not able to add the pictures of the Dam but imagine a picture of a small river with a half built beaver dam across it.  Pretty funny what government thinks it needs to regulate

The Dam

This
is  an actual letter sent to a man named Ryan DeVries regarding a pond on  his property.   It was sent by the Pennsylvania Department of  Environmental Quality, State of Pennsylvania.   This guy’s response  is hilarious, but read The State’s letter before you get to the response  letter.

State
of  Pennsylvania’s letter to Mr. DeVries:

SUBJECT:  DEQ
File No.97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec 20; Lycoming County

Dear Mr. DeVries:

It  has come to the attention of the Department of Environmental Quality that  there has been recent unauthorized activity on the above referenced  parcel of property. You have been certified as the legal landowner and/or  contractor who did the following unauthorized activity:

Construction and maintenance of two wood debris dams  across the outlet stream of Spring Pond.

A  permit must be issued prior to the start of this type of activity. A  review of the Department’s files shows that no permits have been issued   Therefore, the Department has determined that this activity is in  violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource  and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994,  being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Pennsylvania Compiled Laws,  annotated.

The Department has been informed that one or  both of the dams partially failed during a recent rain event, causing  debris and flooding at downstream locations.  We find that dams of  this nature are inherently hazardous and cannot be permitted. The  Department therefore orders you to cease and desist all activities at  this location, and to restore the stream to a free-flow condition by  removing all wood and brush forming the dams from the stream channel.   All restoration work shall be completed no  later than January 31, 2007.

Please notify  this office when the restoration has been completed so that a follow-up  site inspection may be scheduled by our staff.  Failure to comply  with this request or any further unauthorized activity on the site may  result in this case being referred for elevated enforcement  action.

We anticipate and would appreciate your full  cooperation in this matter. Please feel free to contact me at this office  if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
David L.  Price
District Representative and Water Management  Division.

Here
is  the actual response sent back by Mr.  DeVries:

Re:  DEQ File
No. 97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec. 20; Lycoming County

Dear Mr.Price,

Your  certified letter dated 12/17/06 has been handed to me to respond to.   I am the legal landowner but not the Contractor at 2088 Dagget  Lane, Trout Run, Pennsylvania.

A couple of beavers  are in the (State unauthorized) process of constructing and maintaining  two wood “debris” dams across the outlet stream of my Spring Pond.   While I did not pay for, authorize, nor supervise their dam  project, I think they would be highly offended that you call their  skillful use of natures building materials “debris.”

I would like to challenge your department to attempt  to emulate their dam project any time and/or any place you choose.  I believe I can safely state there is no way you could ever match their  dam skills, their dam resourcefulness, their dam ingenuity, their  dam persistence, their dam determination and/or their dam work  ethic.

These are the beavers/contractors you are  seeking.   As to your request, I do not think the beavers are  aware that they must first fill out a dam permit prior to the start of  this type of dam activity.

My first dam question to you  is:
(1) Are you trying to discriminate against my Spring Pond  Beavers, or
(2) do you require all beavers throughout this State  to conform to said dam request?

If you are not  discriminating against these particular beavers, through the Freedom of  Information Act, I request completed copies of all those other applicable  beaver dam permits that have been issued.

(Perhaps we  will see if there really is a dam violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and  Streams, of the Natural Resource and
Environmental Protection Act,  Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113  of the Pennsylvania Compiled Laws, annotated.)

I have  several dam concerns.  My first dam concern is, aren’t the beavers  entitled to legal representation?  The Spring Pond Beavers are  financially destitute and are unable to pay for said representation — so  the State will have to provide them with a dam  lawyer.

The  Department’s dam concern that either one or both of the dams failed  during a recent rain event, causing flooding, is proof that this is a  natural occurrence, which the Department is required to protect.    In other words, we should leave the Spring Pond Beavers alone rather than  harassing them and calling them dam names.

If you  want the damed stream “restored” to a dam free-flow condition please  contact the beavers — but if you are going to arrest them, they  obviously did not pay any attention to your dam letter, they are unable  to read English.

In my humble opinion, the Spring  Pond Beavers have a right to build their unauthorized dams as long as the  sky is blue, the grass is green and water flows downstream.  They  have more dam rights than I do to live and enjoy Spring Pond.  If  the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection lives up  to its name, it should protect the natural resources (Beavers) and the  environment (Beavers’ Dams).

So, as far as the  beavers and I are concerned, this dam case can be referred for  more elevated enforcement action right now. Why wait until 1/31/2007? The  Spring Pond Beavers may be under the dam ice by then and there will be no  way for you or your dam staff to contact/harass them.

In  conclusion, I would like to bring to your attention to a real  environmental quality, health, problem in the area  It is the bears!    Bears are actually defecating in our woods.  I definitely  believe you should be persecuting the defecating bears and leave the  beavers alone.  If you are going to investigate the beaver dam,  watch your dam step! The bears are not careful where they dump!

Being unable to comply with your dam request, and  being unable to contact you on your dam answering machine, I am sending this  response to your dam office.

THANK  YOU, RYAN  DEVRIES & THE DAM BEAVERS

Winter Holding On

Winter Holding On

Last night we had a coating of ice come in on top of our snow.  Tomorrow we are under a winter storm watch.  Winter is going no where fast

Only at Black’s Cliff do we picture out garbage cans on the website coated in ice.

Crew in Holiday ready for the new snow coming tomorrow.  They have been up all week treking through the woods

At the other end of the resort we have a group of snowmobilers who report the trails in great shape

Cliff is back

Cliff is back

It is that time of year and Cliff came out of the closet this weekend.  He heads to the ice March 1st, for our annual ice out contest.   why come out a little early?

A serious game of cards

A serious game of cards

Fritz out winner from last year had his winnings on the table in a serious game of cards with Cliff.  Was Fritz getting some inside info from Cliff for this years contest?  I am not sure but they spent the weekend zipped up in a fish shack with tip ups and beer together.  I hear the jumbo perch were biting

Hmmm anyone noticing a resemblence?

Hmmm anyone noticing a resemblance?

Am I the only one noticing that Fritz has taken on a Cliff, like look this year?  Cliff has gotten a ton of kisses on his frozen hairy check from many ladies over the years, could Fritz be trying the Cliff look?  Fritz needs to pick up a matching hat to complete the look, never fear Blaze Orange can be found year round as it is the official color of the state of Wisconsin

Pizza was on the menu

Pizza was on the menu

Cliff was determined to get a piece of Roberta and Al’s famous pizza.  Last year he stopped in for the same pizza feast before heading to the ice.  Poe was also ready to have a snack, but Al was not handing them out for 4 legged visitors.  Cliff was much luckier, I think he has an in with Roberta

Keep your eyes out for March 1st when Cliff hits the ice for the 5th annual (or is it 4th?) Black’s Cliff Ice Out Contest 2009

Bella Nova Black arrived on Friday to some very happy parents Jen and Steve.  Before we all know it she will be biking around the resort chasing her 6 boy cousins.  1 girl amoung all those boys will be interesting but I am sure in the end she will be the one in charge.

Welcome to the world Bella Nova

Normally Fritz is battling Chicago traffic, today the ultimate in relaxation sitting on a bucket with a fishing rod and light snow coming down.  One persons vacation is everyone’s but believe me Fritz would not trade this spot for a beach in the Carribean (ok that might be stretching it, if it includes a margaritta)

I heard the sound of a small engine on the lake and realized it was one thing,  Al, Jimmy and Fritz were drilling holes on the lake

Headed down and had to go past Craig’s little boo boo from a week ago.  Kaubashine’s dock looks no better now than it did then

Peace and Quiet

Peace and Quiet

One of the reasons ice fishing is attractive.  No cars, no boats, no noise

The report for Tommy from Al and Jimmy is they have spotted a perch and quite a few Budweisers

High Tech icefishing.  Keeping an eye on the jigs from the camera.  Where is Fritz……  hanging out with Cliff in the other shanty and talking about spring

I know there are many out there wondering how much snow came down.  So far at 7 am this is what is on the feeder.  Snow is still coming down.  John the groomer guy says 3 inches and the snowmobile trails will be decent for awhile.  X country trails this snow makes them sweeeeeet

In other news, Craig and Lynnette left in the rolling home for undisclosed warmer temps to the south.  Steve and Troy spent the day knocking down dead birch at the lake and nothing was destroyed or in need of remodeling after the chainsaws were put away.  Anyone see a connection in these 2 pieces of news
