Black’s Cliff Resort’s Birch Bark Blog

The projects, chores, and life of a family-owned, Northern Wisconsin resort.

Once in awhile it is time to do some work to the old green boats.  Some of the boats date back to the 50’s.  Some say the green paint is the reason they stay afloat, others say the pounds of extra paint weigh them down.  The Lusitania is probably from the 70’s as it was at one time a beautiful pink color.  A few fishermen objected to having a pink boat and the color changed to green.

Craig decided a few of the old seats needed some TLC for the next 50 years.  A little boat remodeling started.  Anyone that knows Craig knows that fixing wooden seats and transoms (The back of the boat where the motor connects) is one of his favorite things to do (you think I am kidding…  no I am not, honestly he likes to do it)

One of the pluses of being retired is you get to pick the jobs you do.  He may not look thrilled, but keeping an old boat going for another 50 years thrills the thrifty Craig.

Putting the old boat back together good as new, minus green paint on the seats for one year.

This is the first blog entry that is going live on Facebook.  We are feeding the Birchbark Blog on to Facebook through our Mascot Cliff.  If you look up Cliff Black on Facebook you will get announcements whenever The Birchbark Blog is updated.  Explaining to people why you are friends with such an interesting looking guy on Facebook could also be entertaining.  We were unable to hook the Blog up to the Fan page of Black’s Cliff Resort which was my goal but this is the next best thing.  Will Cliff make it to Twitter… stay tuned but don’t bet on it

Look up Cliff on Facebook as Cliff Black

Bryon and I are trying to figure out how to link the Birchbark Blog up to the fan page of Black’s Cliff on Facebook.  Stay tuned as the computers are humming in Minocqua

The following note is from one of our log books in the cabins.  I thought it summed up some of the reasons everyone should spend time away from the chaos of life and more time locked in a cabin with rain and family

June 4 – 7th

This was our first trip up here from Illinois.  I learned many new things about myself and others.  I learned I have a problem with walking in on others in the restroom.  I learned that one particular gentleman likes fudge and tells big fish stories.  I learned one particular member of my family well be getting help for his snoring problem.  I learned what it is like to relax and read a book again and ride a horse.  I relearned that I talk too much and keep others awake when I’ve been drinking and what a hangover is.  I learned that boats banging against the dock at night sound like someone dribbling a basketball. and loons sound like someone screaming.  I will bring something to run with noise next time.  I learned that this is a beautiful place to come and look forward to coming back again with our bestest friends and family.  (If they ever invite us again)  It was a great trip wish we could have stayed longer

I think this picture sums up why it is important to take some time away from the rat race of life and chaos and spend time at the lake

Mary and David enjoying sunset and a glass of wine.  They had not been up in the spring to enjoy all the spring wildflowers.  They enjoyed it much more than the chaos of Beef A Rama.

Wendy and Chris headed out for one last pontoon boat ride and the heron sent them this great salute.  A fitting end to a great vacation on Lower Kaubashine

I sent my intrepid vacation photographers, Wendy and Chris out on the pontoon boat with their camera.  Little did I know the pictures they would capture.  They came knocking on my door one hour later saying, you are not going to believe what we saw.  All of the pics in this entry were taken with in one hour on the pontoon.  Chris setting off in his best rendintion of Titanic minus iceburgs and sinking boats

The show started right away with 2 eagles swooping in tandem over their heads.  Wendy snapped pics as Chris tried to keep the boat from rocking too much

With tips touching this would have been an awesome pic if the boat was not rocking so much

Again not perfect sharpness, but I think you can get an idea of the areial show Chris and Wendy were treated to.

Wow is all I could say when I saw the pictures.  Awesome Wendy!!

Wendy and Chris also ran into Momma Duck.  Momma Duck from yesterday has been stalked by the National Enquirer in the mystery of the paturnity of her babies.  The eagles had nothing nice to add to the story.  Momma duck has signed her babies up for therapy

The show was not over, the loons also showed up for their moment on the blog.  Wendy’s was in 7th heaven with her camera with cooperation like this from the local birds

Loons hiding in the back bay among the reeds were they are nesting

One final show the loons were not to be out done by the eagles and put on a show of flapping and calling

Our intrepid blog photographer Wendy.  Thanks, Wendy for sharing your awesome pics.  I am still trying to figure out how you got the cooperation of the Herons, ducks, eagles and loons…  Chris said the only thing that could have appeared that would have been awesome would have been a bear coming down for a drink.  Thanks again to Chris and Wendy

Wendy Klass caught the Blue Heron invading the raft.  Since there have been few to no swimmers this week it had no competition a spot on the raft

The eagle can swoop all he wants I am not giving up my spot.  Maybe a cute female heron will spot me out here and let me fluff her feathers.

Think Troy will get annoyed if I poop on the raft?  I am sure he will not notice

Hey you guys stay on that side of the lake… there really aren’t any fish on this side…

Run kids and don’t listen to that foul mouthed Heron, I know who your father is….  I thought the eagles were bad….

Heron’s rule, ducks drool

All the pictures today were compliments of Chris and Wendy Klass.  They spent the week remembering chasing their kids around the resort and wishing they had made it this year instead of having to work.  Instead they were entertained by watching the antics of the local bird population.  Thanks for the great pics?  Did Chris really make it in the lake since he was carrying a beach towel at 40 degrees…. we shall always wonder

This is the whooping high temp for both Sunday and Monday.  I think the termometer is stuck and the owl looks very unhappy

Winter coats and cold doggies

Only one dog can fit in the coat so Monty was sporting the scottish tartan colors

Many folks did not make it much past the firepits

For entertainment on a cold day bake a potatoe in the fire

Cold day and time to finish the winter puzzle…. one piece missing and…

2 extras..  anyone recognize them?  There is a guy at the puzzle factory laughing

I hear 70 by the weekend they say
