How cold is it?  As cold as it looks

DSC05042

So cold it has us grabbing for memories of times at the beach.  Hey Mon

What does DG stand for in the upper left hand corner.  Any Jamaican would tell you, Damn Good

DSC05044

For those that need their daily pic of the Bearskin.  Looks in good shape as one of the most heavily traveled trails int he area

Poe would like to report that light snow is falling in the Northwoods.  It has been a light and steady snowfall that has covered the ground.  Conditions look great for heading off and playing in the woods or digging through the snow to hide a pig’s ear

DSC05037

For those who can not get enough of the snow falling on the lake through the pines

One of the small trees we planted this year being swallowed up by the snow

It took me 20 minutes to chisel my car out of the ice, sleet, rain and snow that was encrusted on the windshield.  Even after all that I did not have it all off the hood and side windows.  I chanced it up to Moto Mart for coffee this morning.  Steve was still closed for the holidays at Lifespring

DSC05031

What has bare highway yesterday has the same base on it that my windshield had this morning on hwy 51.  I stopped into to talk with John the Groomer guy who grooms the Bearskin Trail.  John said they are starting to groom the trail today.  Last nights mixture has given them a good base now for the trail that they can work with.  Before it has just fluffy snow that poofed around on the trail.  He has happy about what he saw out the window this morning and says the trails should be in good shape for snowmobiling.  If they are in good shape for snowmobiling then the ski trails should also be in good shape.  Only down spot is the lakes, until they are marked you need to stay off them.

Driving down snow encrusted Lower Kaubashine as seen through my snow encrusted windshield.  Right now I would say we have about a foot in the woods of snow

Picture of the Bearsking trail taken this morning at 9am Saturday.  Looks good.  I did see a little snirt a, little farther down the trail.  I have openings up to December 31st and starting on the 2nd if you want to come up and play in the snow

We did get a little rain on top of our snow this morning.  It has been light and we are supposed to get cold and snow on top of it this afternoon and evening.  X Country trails should be fine and dandy.  They will be grooming and when the cold comes in the conditons should be great.  I am sure Island Hop out at Winter Park might not be open but the rest of the trails should be in good shape

Snowmobiliers.  The Bearskin trail I looked down in Hazelhurst this morning and it looked good the trail was white.  The road trails though did get deteriorated from the rain and sleet.  Anything not on the roads should be fine.  The lakes are not marked.  Our lake has 5 inches on it and I have seen sleds go across it fast, but I would not take the chance.  Tom and Mary Ellen have not marked it due to the slushy areas.  Lake Minocqua is also not marked, but tons of sleds have been across it.  Not smart.  The new snow this afternoon and evening and cold temps should get the road trails in better shape.  The lakes I think will have to wait another week or so, maybe by New Years

Snowman makers, this is awesome condiitons for a a snowballl fight or making snowmen.  There is a good foot of packy snow on the ground just waiting to be packed and thrown

Merry Christmas from our family to yours.

DSC04995

The great Christmas storm of 2009 hit and we spent the day plowing and shoveling out.  We got about 7 inches or so new snow on top of what we already had.  We did receive over night some sleet/rain but not enough to damage the snow we have.  The trails in the area both snowmobile and x country are in good shape.  We are supposed to now get cold and have a few more inches of snow come down on top of what we have.  I have openings everyday except for the 31st and 1st.  If you are sitting in rain to the south and ice give a call we have room and snow!

DSC05017

The ice rink at the lake has been shoveled off and the hockey games have started.  Come down if you dare.  The lake is a solid 5 inches thick of ice maybe more.  We will keep the rink clear as long as the boys are home to keep it cleared.

Back to eating cookies and shoveling snow.

Grandma Millie used to serve these lovely green cookies.  I never understood why anyone liked them until I tried them as an adult this year.  Taking a bit of them and having the Creme De Menthe is guaranteed to take the edge off any family Christmas.  Just hand them a few Creme De Menthe Bon, Bons and see them all relax and get along…. Ok that may be asking too much but here is the recipe for you to experiment with on your family and report back.  They are definitely a conversation piece

Creme De Menthe Bon Bons

1 Cup vanilla Wafer crumbs ( I crunched mine up and then put them through a flour sifter )

3/4 cup chopped pecans

1 cup sifted powdered sugar (kids love using the sifter a great job for them)

2tbs light corn syrup

1/3 cup green creme de menthe

Combined and allow to stand for about 1/2 hour.  Shape using a tsp into SMALL balls and roll in powdered sugar.  I put mine in the fridge for an hour then took them off the pan and put them in a container and separated the layers with wax paper.

In other Christmas news, Poe would like to send out a thank you to The Moore Family and especially his buddy Barb for the smoked pig ears that came in the mail for him as a Christmas Present

Woods looking full of snow and tracks in the snow

DSC04971

What were the tracks in the snow?  No idea, pretty sure they were not Poe looking for a place to use

DSC04972

I think this pic depicts the amount of snow in the woods pretty good.  Not a ton but plenty to play in.  The storm at the end of the week is supposed to dump a bit.  We should be getting an idea on the amounts tomorrow morning.  Keep an eye on www.johndee.com is the best forecast in the midwest

Later in the day I returned to find Steve shoveling the steps down to the ice

DSC04977

Ice rink shoveled off while I was in town.  Notice the speed skate track around the hockey rink Steve shoveled.  Also one of the kids left a message in the snow beyond the ice rink.  HELLO

Trail out to the rink if you dare, bring your own stick and a puck.  I think there will be a few hours spent at the lake this break

How much snow do we have?  Enough, to need a sled to move a big chunk of snow for a snow fort

Steve and Troy have made a dent in the wood delivered, but they still have a ways to go.  Ted comes January 7th and time to get cutting

Yes!!  The Mac and the blog are talking in unison!!!  I have found my picture files and have Iphoto and exporting to files figured out!!  I will work on the size of pics next.  Snow on the ground.  I have seen ice fishermen out and the local elementary school has a parking lot full of snowmobiles from the 12, 13 and 14 year olds snowmobiling to school (only Sarah Palin calls them snow machines)  The highschool parking lot is even scarier now, not only is there beginning drivers on their first snow, now compound it with 15 – 18 year olds on snowmobiles trying to find a parking spot.  You take your life in your own hands around the high school.  Bear Skin trail has snowmobile tracks up it, trails are open

DSC04912

Wood pile getting buried in the first snows of the year.  I have been hearing rumblings of a Christmas Eve and Day storm.  Could be interesting.  We still do not have the big plow back.  Most spots have been cleaned up by the John Deer Gator. We even headed down Craig’s driveway today which had never been plowed to open up for him.  He is returning from the balmy south with a suntan tonight.  He will have a rude awakening tomorrow to temps in the single digits

DSC04910

With the cold night time temps, Troy has his ice candle production in full tilt.  Stop in for a ice candle if you are in the area we have plenty of them

I think I am staring to love this Mac.  Still fumbling with a few things, but the ease of use is amazing between it and the PC.  Bryon and Katie were right about the Toyota Sienna and Macintosh computers, just took us awhile to catch up with them.  If you are looking at a new computer in 2010 take time to stop into a Mac store you will not be disappointed just needs a bit of adjustment

DSC04914

Ok, laugh all you want… why a picture of a boot and nothing else?  I took 4 pics this morning this being one of them to experiment with loading on to the Mac, editing, figuring out what folder they were in on the Mac, resizing them for the blog, and finally uploading them.  Somewhere in the exporting of them from Iphoto to my blog picture file I only sent this one and do not have time to figure out where the *&^^ the others are.

Why a pic of a boot?  The boot department of Black’s Cliff is sorrily in bad shape.  Troy stole this boot from Cliff last spring realizing Cliff had better boots than he did at the end of the winter.  We went to Fleet Farm to buy him new ones yesterday and in the process of 2 carts of Christmas shopping and resort shopping ended up with the wrong size of boots for Troy.  Call it Christmas shopping stress.  So this morning he was siliconing the old boots to keep the water out til we go back to Fleet Farm.  I am lucky the duck tape was not used.

So til I get a better lesson from Bryon on Iphoto you will have to deal with this one picture of an ugly boot:)

I do like the Mac and would not go back to the PC at all.  I just need a class in how to use it
