Black’s Cliff Resort’s Birch Bark Blog

The projects, chores, and life of a family-owned, Northern Wisconsin resort.

Got back from Spring Break hoping for no snow to be seen.  There were a few banks of snow

Cliff taking his post back

Tilting a bit to the left.  I don’t think Cliff missed much

Lake just showing signs of thinning around the edges

I will be posting all the Ice Out guesses in the next post as soon as I unbury them from my desk

Cliff had a little time to kill in Memphis on his way home.  He kept a low profile but enjoyed the sights and sounds on Beale street.  It was a completely different world than life at the lake.

Somebody out there is going to post in whey this theatre is famous in Memphis… I can’t remember

Definitely the most interesting and flavorful part of the whole trip was when Cliff stumbled into this Irish Bar on Beale street for some BBQ.  The singer for the evening was this lady complete with Tattos belting out Johnny Cache and Walking in Memphis along with a few others.  Cliff was just happy when she quit using the F Bomb with kids in the room.  Definitely a night that will be remembered.  Time to get back to the lake! Choooo Chooooo

Cliff took his last day in Chattanooga to hang out with some other ice diving friends of his.  He was getting pointers on how to deal with cold water from the best.

The penguins of the Tennessee Aquarium where more than happy to give Cliff pointers and lessons.

Last Stop

Last Stop

One final stop to see the famous Ruby Falls.  It was a 280 foot ride down an elevator, 1/2 mile walk into Look Out Mountain to reach Ruby Falls

Enjoying the sights of a north bound donkey facing the south

The famous Ruby Falls were worth the hike.  Time to head back North for Cliff to take his own fall into Lower Kaubashine.  Back to Amtrak and Homeland Security.  What friends will Cliff run into at Union Station….. He met some interesting folks on the way out who were very interested in helping Cliff find his way around town and extracuricular activities for a price.  Union Station is a very interesting place…..

What happened to get Cliff in this predicament

What happened to get Cliff in this predicament

Apparently the folks in Fayetteville Tennessee objected to Cliff fishing without a fishing licence in the local city fountain/park.  Cliff called some folks (Ellen or was it Elvis) who pulled a few strings and he was let out  on bail for good behavior.  Cliff quickly beat it out of town

Before he left, cliff stopped in at the majors house who requested Cliff’s impersination of Elvis in a bright orange hat.  Fayetteville will never be the same again

Look Out Mountain

Look Out Mountain

Deciding he had better get out of the state of Tennessee, Cliff headed to Northern Georgia and Look Out Mountain where he enjoyed the sights seeing 5 states from this vantage point

King of the World

King of the World

After traveling all over the country, Cliff pulled over to this remote cabin in a Halla (Hallow).  Looked suspiciously like home.  Even a golden retreiver on the porch who looked a lot like Poe

Cliff felt right at home when he saw this sign and grabbed the bow saw

He was thinking folks at Black’s Cliff got it easy with all the pinewood Troy, Steve and the boys keep cut around the resort.  Hey where is Troy rigtht now……

The spring fed lake at the Hallow

The spring fed lake at the Hallow

Where will he end up tomorrow…… Stay tuned.  We did hear it was 60’s on Lower Kaubashine today but they are still driving cars on Lake Minocqua ice fishing so even with the warm temps the ice is still thick.  Cliff is safe staying away on Spring Break a little longer.

Poe and the Pigs are doing just fine, but I heard Peach the Nasty love bird took out her lonliness on Jim’s thumb.  She had better watch it or Jim will leave the window open and she can deal with the eagles

Cliff has always been a big fan of Elvis so it seemed logical that he head in the direction of Memphis on Amtrak.  Maybe Cliff will pick up some new hair style ideas and ditch the orange hat

Needing wheels to get around the state of the King of Rock and Roll, Cliff stopped in at the friendliest Hertz dealership in Memphis.  After trying to fit in the smallest car they had with all his luggage they friendly folks at Hertz outfitted Cliff in a better fitting vehicle and sent him down the road.  I think Cliff was making some of their other customers nervous, he heard people muttering something about The King being in disguise under all that hair….  Before the National Enquirer showed up Cliff headed down the road with all 4 wheels on the ground

Only living with Troy the bird encyclopedia would Cliff know this bird as a Mocking Bird.  Something we never see in the Northwoods

Cliff enjoying the sights along the Tennessee river.  He decided to take a route 66 type road trip on hwy 64.  keep an eye on the News reports for sightings of Cliff aka The King in Disguise..  Where to next…..

1st stop

1st stop

Cliff heard about the water parks in the Wisconsin Dells and decided it would be a good idea to sharpen up on his swimming skills before taking the plunge.  Unfortunately he missed the requirement to shave.  He scared a few small children in his speedo and he decided it was time to head out of town before they chased him out with pitchforks

Cliff met this very nice lady who was more than willing to sell him a ticket to get him out of the Wisconsin Dells

Chooooo Choooooo

Clue of Cliff's direction

Clue of Cliff's next destination

Rumor has it that Cliff will be passing through the Windy City trying to get to the top of the Sear’s Tower.  Will Homeland Security let him through?

Stay tuned and in the meantime play a few Elvis tunes for Cliff.  I am walking in _________

Cliff got fan mail from his youngest fan.  The 2nd half of the letter particularly got his attention

Never hurts to try:)

Very Frozen Lake

Very Frozen Lake

With the cold week this week the lake is definitly a long way from going out.  Due to that fact…..

Cliff decided enough was enough and followed the rules and grabbed a log at the beach and headed up the steps.  Time to take a break from the lake for awhile…..  Where does a guy looking like Cliff go for Spring Break….. stay tuned and see if Homeland Security reports him to the FBI.

Turning over operations to Steve

Turning over operations to Steve

Cliff grabbed the reservation books, money pouch and headed to Life Spring to let Steve know he was in charge of all operations at the resort for awhile.  Steve will have help from Jim and Nancy in Birchwood.  Jim and Nancy are keeping Poe and the guniea pigs feed and happy.  Last Cliff saw, Nancy was patrolling the resort grounds with a Red Rider BB Gun keeping an eye on things with her dogs Hazel, Opal and of course Poe

Steve decided he would have fun over Spring Break and give the horse swings a make over to get them ready for Bella Nova to use when she gets old enough.  How far back do these horse swings date?  I do know they have been remade many times by Maynard, Craig and now Steve.  So my guess is the 40’s or 50’s but the resort would not be the same without them.  There are many adults at the resort that look back at them as a fond memory of their childhood.  Many would love to have one last ride on them if they could fit on them.

Stay Tuned for Cliff’s Spring Break 2009

Because my finger would freeze to the camera shutter if I tried to take more.  I hear that spring is official in one week

Temps went down below zero with 40 mile per hour winds last night and this morning.  Cliff was not enjoying his night on the lake.  The sun was rising to warm him up but it was not a warm sun with the wind.  I am sure there was no ice melting under Cliff last night.  This may be a long Ice Out Contest.  Remember entries must be in by Saturday the 14th for Ice Out 2009.  My mail box has been filling up.  Why this Satuday the 14th?  tune back in to find out what Cliff is up to next week I gaurantee a few laughs

Whatever your imagination of how cold this looks multiply it by 10

There is no warmth in this sun today

Fresh Snow Blanketing Birchwood

Fresh Snow Blanketing Birchwood

Cliff feeling the storm coming and hunkering down.  We are supposed to be getting 4 inches of snow tonight.  Spring is on hold for a few days.  To cheer Cliff up I emailed his favorite TV personality, Ellen.  Will Ellen ever call Cliff?  He is waiting…….

Lake looking lonely and no melting today

The slush from the last few days has started to drag Cliff’s chair down

To move Spring along a little we started to burn the brush left over from Craig’s tree destruction.  How thick is the ice?  Well Troy had no fear being where he was on the lake with a hot burn barrel

Spring Black’s Cliff work out is in full swing.  The logs are slowly making it up from the beach everytime someone goes down to check out Cliff up comes a log.  Who needs a stair master when we have beach steps and a pile of logs

Paul

You missed the last time we took the truck on the lake:)  It is not something Troy and Steve ever want to experience again.  It almost involved a tow truck and an angry neighbor.  The sounds of the ice cracking under the truck were enough to send Troy and Steve to the bar.  However if you want to drive across the lake and battle to get the truck off the lake at the entrance where the plow runs into the shoreline come on up it is a lot of fun:)  LOL meanwhile we are getting into shape on those beach steps.  Work out recession style
